What is emotional wellness and why is it important at this time?
The last few months have been very difficult for a lot of people. From dealing with Covid-19- to the recent developments on race, police brutality and subsequent unrests, it is quite normal for people to have a wide range of emotions. Some of these emotions might be very challenging to deal with, especially when you feel so helpless or hopeless with this situation. It is normal to feel stressed, scared, worried or even uncertain about the future. There is no right or wrong way to respond to such events, but it is important to remind yourself that your emotions are normal and valid.
An emotion is a complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes. These changes influence your thought process and behavior. When you experience different types of emotions, there is a change in mood, personality and even your level of motivation. Emotions affect how we feel and also how we act or behave. This explains why it is very important for us to manage our emotions during such unprecedented times. Some common negative emotions that individuals might experience during such difficult times include anger, fear, sadness, loneliness, grief shame and guilt.
Emotional wellness refers to the way in which we become aware and understand our emotions. It also refers to our ability to manage our feelings and emotions through adversity, change and challenges in our lives. Emotional wellness is what allows us to pay attention to the present moment through maintaining a sense of mindfulness. When we are tuned in to our emotions, we become more easily aware of our feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Once we become aware of our emotions, we are then easily able to make a decision or take action regarding a certain feeling or issue.
The ability to manage our emotions, among other factors determines our overall mental well-being. Stress, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues have a common component; the role of negative emotions. Emotional wellness inspires self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and also helps in the development of inner strength. During difficult and uncertain times, it is important to be attentive to both the positive and negative emotions. Being emotionally well or healthy does not mean that you are happy all the time. It means that you are aware of your emotions and can identify ways of managing these emotions in a healthy way.
There are many ways of improving or maintaining emotional wellness. While different things might work differently for different people, here are a few tips that can help you improve your emotional wellness.
